In Brooklyn, New York the Brooklyn Bridge Park is getting even greener! They recently added a new solar-powered recharging station for their electric vehicles. They added this to their already lush green parks, and made it an even more incredible spot for the residents and tourists who roam Brooklyn. A renewable energy company that is based in Brooklyn, Beautiful Earth Group (BE), gave this as a gift to the park system. BE is hoping other parks and recreation systems will follow suit and switch to enviornment friendly things like this. The charging system stores the energy into battery packs and then the battery packs get transferred to the trucks. The parks are saving $200,000 in gas prices and preventing apprx. 530 tons of carbon dioxide from being released into the air. You can learn all about the Brooklyn Bride Parks and how they're helping an environmental project, plaNYC, here.
In my opinion, this is a fantastic idea. This is one of the best i've actually heard in awhile. After reading about plaNYC, and the Brooklyn parks I can honestly see that New York is making an effort to help out the environment. I can relate this solar powered machine to the activities we're doing now in science, with the solar and wind stations. It helped me understand a little bit how this could actually be used in real life, and how it can help us make a change in our own communities. Imagine if in future years a lot of our cars were powered by these solar machines! The amount of money and carbon dioxide we would save is rediculous if you think about it!Do you think that our society could move towards this change?
How effective do you think this would be for our community?
Would you be willing to make this change for the environment?
It's promising to finally see energy sources besides fossil fuels being seriously considered. I think that in the coming years, as both the price of alternative energy goes down and fossil fuels become scarcer, alternative energy will grow in popularity. As companies begin to acknowledge how much alternative energy systems can save beyond their initial cost, they will start to make room for the extra expendature especially when they see their current electricity bills.
ReplyDeleteThis Sunday, I rode in the Five Boro Bike tour in NYC, a 43-mile ride around the city. Along the way, I was happy to see a solar powered telephone in the middle of Central Park. Hopefully, in the future, solar power will be put to even greater uses. Speaking of which, being the uber-geek I am, I recently secured my own mini solar panel off of sciplus.com. After spending a few minutes last night wiring it up to a small lightbulb, I'm happy to say that solar power does indeed work!
I found this article very interesting. I competely agree with you marykate. What New York is doing is great. Everyone knows that we're running out of fossil fuels but yet were still using them more and more. This solar-energy station is a great idea. I hope that other parks will follow in Brooklyn's footsteps in going green. If all parks add stations like these then we could save our environment. Solar energy is a very clean alternate energy source. The parks should thank BE for the great gift.
ReplyDeleteWhen i read this article it reminded me of the highways around this area. The lights that surround the highway are powered by solar panels. These solar panels are lighting the way for drivers while saving our environment. It also reminded me of what we've been learning in class. Now that i know about the alternate energy sources i understand what they can do. This makes me appreciate the new solar station in the park.
I would make this change for the environment. Everyday that we are using fossil fuels, we are destroying the place we live in. By making this change we could decrease the use of oil and coal and save our environment. Our environment is the most importatn thing, without it we couldnt survive.
I think that this is a great thing that is happening to New York. Not only does it help the environment, it helps the people and the city itself. The city saves loads of money on this idea while playing a big impact on getting rid of global warming. I believe if we all try to make this change it can benefit the environment greatly
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of the time i went to Florida. In flordia while driving around in my rental car, my family and I passed a whole neighborhood of people who had made the change to use solar panels on their roofs. This made me believe that people do care what is happening and are concerned.
I do believe the city of Philly can make thischange. It will save them money and help the environment. In a city where hundreds of thousands of gallons of gas are used a day, this recharge station could just what we need!
I think it is very nice that this sort of thing is starting to happen. However, I feel that it needs to start happening faster. I feel like it is going to be up to our generation to fix the problems of the generation one step back from us. I feel like it is our job to clean up the mess of the ones before us. I guess this is the goal of every generation, but regardless, we need to get to work on this subject. I find it really depressing that lower and lower percentages of students are going into sciences, when science is the tool that we will need to fix these "messes". The human race is a very young one, and it needs to learn before it goes into self destruct. Humans were given a lot of power on this planet and we need to stop this species-wide selfishness. We are a strong species that isn't all that intelligent and it very possibly might bring all of the other species down. We really need to get to work on this. Alternative energies are a must. I am so glad to see these changes popping up. I for one would absolutely be all for this environmental change. I think that our community would benefit greatly from this movement because it is not just a community problem. It is world wide. So let's start this global reform.
